Review: City Story (iOS)

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been playing this little addictive game called City Story. I know, it was only a few months ago where I ranted about Facebook Games like Farmville, but this is on the iPhone, so it’s different! City Story, the latest from TeamLava, is not only fun, but it’s free! If there is one thing in live I absolutely love, it’s when something is free.

In City Story you start off with money and your town, and while there are some buildings already there like the Town Hall, some businesses, and a few homes, everything else is a blank slate. Having the option to move all of the presets around, you can completely create an entirely different layout, and really get creative. Think of this like if SimCity married a cute anime character and they lived on Facebook.

Like other social games, you have a way to earn money, earn experience, and to level up. How this is achieved is through factories. I believe you start off with three, and you can select what the factories build. Thankfully it’s not buildings, residences, or businesses. Instead your factories can build various items like candy bars, popsicles, video games, yo-yo’s, water bottles, and more. While you can’t do anything with those items, you do earn experience and once they have completed, you earn money. With your money, you purchase everything that goes into your town, and you use the money to upgrade. Off the top of my head I can’t remember what was required to do the first upgrade, but I remember spending hundreds of thousands of my coins in order to do the last two.

In keeping with the whole “get more neighbors and you can do this” aspect from Farmville, Chocolatier, and others, you can only do certain upgrades once you reach a certain amount of friends. The great thing is that this game doesn’t ask to be linked to your Facebook, your Twitter, or anything like that. All you have to do is create an ID name within their little network, and you’re done. It doesn’t ask for your full name, contact info, email… you can really be completely anonymous. So far, I have like 10 neighbors, and it’s not because I know the people. It’s because I want to be able to play the game without any restrictions, and I also want people to be able to clean more of my buildings.

For a free game, it’s really enjoyable. I like how I can always change the layout of my city whenever I want, I like how I have a variety of items to choose from, and I like that I can play this wherever I want, whenever I want without having to bother my online friends with stupid status updates. If you own an iPhone, an iPod Touch, or an iPad, I highly suggest getting City Story if you’re into games like this because it’s risk-free, and odds are you’ll enjoy it.

To get your free download of City Story, check out the iTunes App Store! Also, if you do get the game, or currently have it and need a neighbor, add me: VivoEstSomnio – my town name is Korriban..tee hee.
