The Crow Remake – The News So Far

The Crow was an intense film about life, death and revenge. Now it looks like a second round is on the way.In 1994 The Crow premiered in theaters across the country. The film was a financial success, opening at the top of the box office. Most people came to see the final performance of Brandon Lee who tragically died during filming. The film is about a man who was thrown out a window and killed while his wife was raped and murdered. A year after his death, he rises from the grave to avenge their deaths so they can rest in peace.

For a while now, there has been talk of a re-make in Hollywood. Producers Ryan Kavanaugh, Jeff Most, and Edward R. Pressman have contracted Stephen Norrington, who directed The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Blade, to write and direct their remake. In a report to MTV, the producers said that Norrington’s script wasn’t quite what they wanted and decided to hire Nick Cave to create a new draft of Norrinton’s script. The script has reportedly been completed.

Norrington recently revealed something interesting about his remake, that it isn’t a remake at all. It’s more like a reboot but not in the usual sense. Instead, he wanted to keep the premise of the old film and create a completely new story as well as new characters. He also discussed his ideas about shooting. He has said that he wanted to shoot the film in a documentary style, making it look more realistic.

Currently, no actors have been confirmed for the new film, however, it has been rumored that Ethan Peck, known for playing Patrick Verona on 10 Things I Hate About You, will be cast as the lead. The producers have been eager to get started and are planning on beginning production toward the end of 2010.

This is a film I’m a little torn over. I throughly enjoyed the first film and thought it was very captivating. The thought of a remake or reboot in this case is a little unsettling. In the hands of a director like Norrington, it has potential to live up to the first film but with Hollywood as misguided as it is right now, it may fall in the same way that other remakes and reboots have been doing lately. Let’s hope that Norrington will be able to make this film as good as the first, if not better.
