Review: Flick Buddies (iOS)

Bane Games, an indie studio based in Brisbane, Australia, recently released Flick Buddies which is ridiculously awesome. Everything about it, down to the character design, is so fun and so addicting, and if you don’t have this game on your iOS device, do so right now.

Now, I’ll be honest and say that I had never heard of Bane Games before until I got an email from them, but I’m sure glad that I did. If anybody has been paying attention to gaming lately, especially for mobile devices, there have been some amazing indie studios popping up all over the globe. I’m pleased to say that Bane Games is easily a part of that group, and I hope that Flick Buddies is just the beginning.

With that out of the way, let me say that Flick Buddies is fantastic. It really, truly is. The little intro clip is cute, the music makes me want to bop around like a rabbit on uppers, and the game play is a delight. Flick Buddies isn’t a game where you have a bunch of things to control and worry about, and that is what makes it great. It’s a simple little app where you and up to 3 friends compete with each other to see who can get the highest score before time runs out. If you don’t have anybody to play with (don’t be ashamed), you can play against the game and still have a blast.

How one gets the points is simple, depending on how you look at it. You have your team, and everybody else has theirs. When the timer starts, you use your finger to fling one of the little dudes, or dudettes, into the air with the goal being to get them to the target that moves around. As you progress in the game there are obstacles to get around, and there is also what I call the “Black Hole of Death”. If your little guy gets near or in there, they are toast. The teams are random and change each round, and there are 4 the game rotates through: Burger Family, Snail Family, Speaker Family, and Zombie Family. The Snail Family makes me laugh because the female of the group is dressed like a French maid and has these big ol’ knockers. Who knew that snails could be stacked like that?

The game keeps things interesting by having a rotating set of power-ups that are available. Once you fling your little one, there is an option to select the power-up. My personal favorite was where the character would split in half so that you had a chance to earn double the points if both made it in. There is another handy one where you can stop them in mid-air and avoid the BHoD or other obstacles.

Graphically the game is charming, and big props are in order for whoever was in charge of character design. As I mentioned before the soundtrack is incredibly catchy, so you have all been warned. In future updates we’ll see more teams, Game Center support, and achievements but that won’t happen until early 2011.

For only $o.99 (a bargain if you ask me) this app has it all: fun and addicting game play, something families can play together with their children, hours of entertainment, and the knowledge that new content will be coming for it soon.

Flick Buddies is available now for all iOS devices, so buy it now and enjoy the crap out of it. Also, be sure to follow Flick Buddies on Twitter, Like them on Facebook, and check out the official website for Bane Games!
