Bethesda Announces DOOM 3 BFG Edition

DOOM is one of those properties that EVERYONE has heard of, thanks in no small part to the blockbuster success of the feature film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The series of games based on that movie, though oddly released years and years ahead of the movie in an odd choice of product tie-in marketing, have been even more iconic, and have had a major hand in defining first person shooters in both the action and horror genres across multiple generations of gaming hardware. Now, the definitive console collection of the DOOM game series has been announced in DOOM 3 BFG Edition.

DOOM 3 BFG Edition will bring a completely re-mastered DOOM 3 and its Resurrection of Evil expansion to the current generation of consoles (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) along with seven new levels (“The Lost Mission”) providing hours of additional, new content. The set includes:

  • 3D Optimization
  • 5.1 Surround Sound
  • Achievements/Trophies
  • Improved rendering/lighting
  • New checkpoint save system
  • Fine-tuned controls
  • New armor-mounted flashlight, so you can see and shoot simultaneously

John Carmack, a name that needs no introduction, had this to say about the new BFG Edition:

DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release. Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! In the first paragraph, I said that this was, and I quote, “…the definitive console collection of the DOOM game series…” How can this be the definitive collection, without the original titles that launched it into legend? Well, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will include the original DOOM and DOOM 2.

There is no solid release date other than “2012” as of yet. We’ll keep you updated.
