Review: SEGA Vintage Collection: Golden Axe (XBLA)

Two years before Streets of Rage introduced us to adventures atop astonishingly angry avenues and alleyways, Golden Axe brought us side-scrolling beat’em-up action in arcades and on the SEGA Genesis with a wonderfully fantastical presentation. SEGA, realizing that releasing a Streets of Rage Vintage Collection without releasing a Vintage Collection for its genre predecessor, Golden Axe, has…well….released a Vintage Collection for the Golden Axe series, including Golden Axe, Golden Axe 2, and Golden Axe…wait for it…it’ll shock you when you see it…you’ll never guess it…3!

I’ll wait while you recover the pieces of your blown mind.

I heard about the SEGA Vintage Collection: Golden Axe package at the same time as I heard about the SEGA Vintage Collection: Streets of Rage collection, and I jumped at the chance to get my hands on six classic titles. The Golden Axe series has always been fun, and always stood out to me because of my love of fantasy. The ability to play an already fun side-scrolling beat’em-up title in a colorful and entertaining fantasy setting was one I could never pass up. Golden Axe, across all three titles, provides this in spades. With the inclusion of time trail modes and online co-operative multiplayer, the Golden Axe package fills in nicely.

As with Streets of Rage, the convenience of having all three titles in one, easy to access launcher should not be underestimated, and heavily supports the package’s 800MSP purchase price. The inclusion of local and online multiplayer, as well as the time trials modes, further support the purchase price. If you’re not a fan of older games, then you obviously won’t be a fan of something titled a “Vintage Collection,” but if you appreciate the roots of modern gaming, or want a nice little trip down memory lane, the SEGA Vintage Collection: Golden Axe package is a great deal.
