NEOGEO X GOLD Coming December 6, 2012

Due to its higher price, I never owned a NEOGEO home system. I recall wanting one desperately, but my parents raised me on teachers’ salaries, and a NEOGEO simply wasn’t in the cards. That’s not to say I never experienced it, however. From the arcades to my friend’s house, I experienced the full range of NEOGEO goodness in the early days of the 1990s. In the arcades, the NEOGEO machine was always on my list of cabinets to hit before my supply of quarters was depleted, and it always had a game for me. Now, the NEOGEO experience is returning to the living room at a time when I actually can afford it in the form of the NEOGEO X GOLD Entertainment System.

Tommo Inc. is handling North American distribution, and they have released pricing, availability, and details about this white whale of mine. Due December 6, 2012, the NEOGEO X GOLD will come with a handheld unit, a dock, and a joystick pad, allowing mobile and console entertainment for $199.99. The handheld comes pre-loaded with 20 NEOGEO titles, and is built with a 4.3″ LCD display, expandable memory, internal speakers, and a headset jack. It can dock on the NEOGEO X Station to both charge the handheld and transmit its image using HDMI to your TV, with the NEOGEO X Joystick used for control. The pre-loaded games are:

  • 3 Count Bout
  • Art of Fighting II
  • Alpha Mission II
  • Baseball Stars II
  • Cyber Lip
  • Fatal Fury
  • Fatal Fury Special
  • The King of Fighters ’95
  • King of the Monsters
  • Last Resort
  • League Bowling
  • Magician Lord
  • Metal Slug
  • Mutation Nation
  • Nam 1975
  • Puzzled
  • Real Bout – Fatal Fury Special
  • Samurai Shodown II
  • Super Sidekicks
  • World Heroes Perfect

Now, $200 for hardware to play games that have, for the most part, been released on PSN already does seem excessive, but this has two things going for it: it allows you to play these games on a mobile system, and it has expandable memory, which would suggest more titles to come.

I, for one, can only hope that it lives up to my expectations.
