Review: Joe Danger 2: The Movie (XBLA)

Have you played Joe Danger? It’s been out for almost a year, come December, and it’s an incredibly fun game for you and your friends to check out and enjoy. For those of you who have played the original, you’ll be pleased to know that Hello Games has developed a sequel, Joe Danger 2: The Movie, now available on Xbox LIVE and available at a later date on the PlayStation Network. Similar to games like Trials, you’ll spend a lot of time going back to played levels trying to improve your performance and unlock more content.

Joe Danger 2: The Movie is a racing platformer. Joe Danger’s expert stunt skills have caught the eye of a movie director, and he’s been brought on to perform stunts for a lot of movies. You’re going to perform chase scenes, race away from an avalanche while you’re on skis, jet pack your way through a level, and more, all as you punch other riders on your path to victory. Even without the entertaining story, the gameplay alone is enough to make the game well worth the purchase price. From the moment I started playing, I could tell that the developers were movie fans. You’ll see what I mean when you get to the level where you control a mine cart being chased by a giant ball. The game’s controls are also very simple, and presented to you on-screen as you play the first few levels. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no online multiplayer, only local. Local multiplayer is great, but online multiplayer has become a necessity. I can only hope that a patch is submitted adding online multiplayer to the game at some point.

I enjoyed unlocking each new area and going back to beat levels in new, fun ways. From riding a motorcycle and dodging traffic to doing sweet tricks with a jet pack as you zoom across a level, Hello Games has also managed to create a graphically good game with solid audio design.

Overall, I’d say Hello Games has a good game on their hands. As I said above the graphics and audio are good. When it comes to gameplay, it’s solid and entertaining. Joe Danger 2: The Movie has major replay value, whether it’s playing solo or having friends over for a great time. Of course with any game some issues will come, such as the lack of online multiplayer. Is the game worth purchasing? I’d say yes, and if you have friends who enjoy playing games with you on your couch that’s another reason. What about the price? It’s still quite good and well worth it. If the game ever goes on sale be sure to grab it.
