Review: God Mode (XBLA)

Review: God Mode (XBLA)

When it comes to shooters, I’m a huge fan! Now, I want you to sit back and think of a game in which you and four friends team up against the onslaught of Hell. What’s the goal? Simply kill the waves of enemies and get the next area, which may or may not be a boss. Anyways, recently Atlus released the game God Mode on Xbox Live and I’ve been putting in a lot of time with friends. I can’t help but enjoy games that keep me and friends busy, but take note not all games are that good.

Does this game provide a good time? Will there be a huge replay value after beating every level? That’s what you’ll find out in this review of God Mode for the Xbox 360.

If you’ve yet to hear about God Mode you might want to know this game is quite interesting in its own way. You can find this title on the Xbox Live marketplace, PSN, and Steam. Now you may be asking… What is this game about? You are a descendant of an ancient god who has been turned mortal by Hades. That’s pretty much all you get to learn about yourself! What are you tasked with? Kill or be killed and complete the level. How do you gain your powers back? You don’t but you’ll be granted perks in each area of the maze you happen to visit. What could be fun about a game with no real storyline? That’s a good question. What makes this game different from others you see online? It could be the fact that you have to focus on having a good team if you’d like to survive the hellish mazes you’ll go through. It could be fun in the way of just goofing off or simply teaming up with friends. If you expect God Mode to be a game that you could play solo and do well boy will you be wrong. Each time I tried to complete one of the many levels I’d die in no time. This title is one of the best if played with friends or others online.

If you’re like me and always start with getting the controls down my advice is to do so quickly. The controls will take some time to grasp. My advice if you plan on buying this game is to practice and get the controls down before jumping online with others. It may not take forever to learn but it’s better to know what everything does. If you don’t you’ll be sure to die in no time and go through all your lives. How can you help yourself to stay alive once the controls are learned and you’ve played a few matches?  You earn XP (to gain levels) and money (to spend). This will grant you access to buying new guns, special powers, and new looks. My advice in this area of the game is to save up and only spend your money on upgrading and unlocking new weapons. This is one of those stores where buying needless stuff early isn’t worth it and to give yourself a new look once you’ve got a good setup going on. Since God Mode doesn’t have a storyline, you can play in your own way. From the start you’ll get to select different locations to play from each with its own way of playing. Some enemies may be easy like the skeletons and others being pure hell unless you’re teamed up with friends or random users online.

As I’ve said above this game has some cool features as you play in each area. I remember in older games we were provided “modifications” such as 1 shot kill, supergib, or even big head mode. I’m not saying all those perks are in-game but you’ll have many showing up at random times. These perks are chosen at random and will change the experience each time you play. Having a game that provides a fun time between you and friends is always good, a game that provides a different experience each time is also a plus. However, all games have good and bad about them. What about the bad about this game?

First, the game does not feeling as polished as it should be. What could have fixed this? To me the team could have spent a little more time adding in more levels than the ones they have now, update the graphics a bit more (it seem a few years old), new weapon ideas, stomping out the few bugs that have shown up, and more. Of course I hope at some point we’ll see a title update to fix the minor glitches within the game.

Overall, it’s a good game but I feel as if the game needed a bit more polish. This game is good when playing with friends. Playing solo is okay but my advice is to look for online matches since it’s fun when with others. If you’re looking for a game for you and friends to team up on God Mode is the game to buy. God Mode gives the gamer a huge reason to play the game over and over and that’s always good. The price is cheap and you’ll be in for a lot of different ways of playing each time you boot up the game.
