Hands-On with Dragon Fin Soup

Hands-On with Dragon Fin Soup

Grimm Bros. is back with the highly anticipated game that is over three years in the making, Dragon Fin Soup. I’ve now played Dragon Fin Soup four times and there hasn’t been a single dragon, fin, or any soup to be seen. There is an angry, alcoholic fairy tale heroine named Red Robin, who aggressively makes her way through a tactical, fantasy world.

The game is played in a top down, two dimensional perspective and is the movement and combat are turn based. Each time the character moves, every other NPC in the currently procedurally generated map moves as well. This leads to having to plan far ahead because the game is a rogue-like with some scripted events. There is also a survival mode with permanent death.

While the game has a beautiful art style that pulls from a fairy tale background, the character overlays give a real pop to the action taking place behind it. With many different locations, activities and a crafting system that I have yet to dive into being a part of the world, the replay value with surely be packed in upon release.

The controls to the game while playing were quite down to the point. However, it felt difficult, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be a huge learning curve once the game comes out later this year since things can change. Over the last couple years Dragon Fin Soup has become more intriguing, challenging, and fun each time I have played it. I have friends who walk around with me at conventions and they want to sit down with me on the Grimm Bros. couch to give their own shot and getting further than I did in my playthrough. I can’t wait to give the game another shot at PAX Prime this year, and if you are heading out the event for yourself, there will be plenty of art, swag, and gameplay to get your hands out.

Dragon Fin Soup is scheduled to release before the end of 2015 and will be available on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, PSVita, Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux.
