This news probably doesn’t come as too big of a shock, as The Division has been highly anticipated since it’s E3 announcement back in 2013. The Division has also set Ubisoft records for total digital full game sales in a single day across all platforms, releasing on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on Tuesday. This is good news for Ubisoft, as they seem to have another hit on their hands. Tom Clancy’s The Division didn’t launch without a hitch however as a slew of launch issues quickly came to light as the game went live.
Connectivity issues were experienced throughout the day but that seems to be a typical launch day nuisance for many new games these days. However, with over 6 million players logging in for the beta one would expect these disruptions to be minimal. Players were also experiencing issues claiming some of their pre-purchased gear, an issue in which Ubisoft says they are working to fix. Perhaps the most comical issue is one in which players are unable to enter or exit safe houses due to other players trolling the doorways blocking access to the rooms. Collision settings cause players to bump into one another as opposed to passing through each other as in most MMO type games. This seems like the kind of bug that would have been caught during the beta but somehow managed to slip through the cracks.
Despite these issues, the response to The Division as a whole seems to be very positive. The game play is solid and the dark zone seems to be a huge hit. In case you weren’t already aware Tom Clancy’s The Division is a third person, open world RPG that takes place weeks after a devastating pandemic sweeps through New York City. One by one, basic services fail and in only days, without food or water, society goes crazy. The Division, a unit of tactical agents is activated to save society. This is where you come in to team up with other players to investigate the sources of the virus and reclaim the city.
Despite a few opening day hiccups the sales figures seem to suggest an instant success for The Division and Ubisoft. Only time will tell how big of a success the title is but breaking opening day records for Ubisoft suggests it has made a place for itself in the companies lineup of hit titles.
