KINGDOM HEARTS UNCHAINED χ Downloaded Over 2 Million Times in North America

Surprised? Me neither, but good news besides. With a lot of funding riding on the upcoming Final Fantasy XV this September, Square Enix had to make some ground in other ways. Out of all the development teams out there, Square Enix has effectively capitalized on the mobile gaming market, albeit their software is usually a bit too expensive. Just last month, a new entry into the long running and beloved Kingdom Hearts franchise, Unchained χ hit the App Store and the Google Play Store.

Action is turn-based and quick.

Action is turn-based and quick.

Of course, Unchained is nowhere near as complex or as broad in scope as core titles in the series. Unchained lets players create an avatar, upgrade medals featuring Disney and Final Fantasy characters, and team up with friends to take down armies of heartless. The combat is actually interesting, forcing efficiency by rewarding players for beating enemies in a single turn. As the game goes on, these missions become a bit harder, making the strategy solid, if not simple. I’ve accidentally sunk plenty of three hour sessions to the game’s structure and art style.

The fact that the game is so popular is a testament to how well-loved the series is. Fans have been clamoring for Kingdom Hearts 3 for quite some time, reaching a fever pitch when a new video is published. If anything, this mobile entry will keep fans busy, while also raising funds to fuel the larger games up Square Enix’s sleeves.

To celebrate the recent success of the game, as well as the movie Zootopia, keyblade wielders will be able to acquire costumes and medals based off Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. It’ll be cool to see which of Disney’s new films will make appearances in Unchained, as well as future Kingdom Hearts titles. My vote is torn between a Wreck-It-Ralph world or a Star Wars world. Sora needs a lightsaber in his life. He’s never said such, but I can tell. I can tell. . .
