Metroid Fan Game Celebrates 30 Years

Metroid Fan Game Celebrates 30 Years

Metroid is a series that have fans torn as the last major game from Nintendo was Other M, a game that played fairly well, but ruined Samus’ character. Fan of the series have even go as far as petition to get Metroid: Federation Force axed, as many are disappointed that the next entry in the Prime series of first person shooters won’t even be featuring one of the greatest video game heroines of all time. Lucky for gamers, Nintendo aren’t the only ones capable of making games as a group of fans have created a stellar looking Metroid 2: Return of Samus remake known as Project AM2R, or Another Metroid 2 Remake.

As the project page states, some of the greatest moments in the Metroid storyline happen during the events of the Gameboy classic. Putting this story into the modern era, the fan game takes Metroid 2 and puts it in the style of Metroid Fusion or Metroid Zero Mission on the GBA, arguably two of the best games in the series.

This goes to show once again how dedicated Nintendo fans can be. Their legacy have inspired thousands of game designers to create their own interpretation on these characters as well as break into their own designs. Couple this love of the series with the craft and polish into AM2R, makes me yearn for an official 2D entry by Nintendo themselves. However, if Star Fox Zero is any indication, there is little hope for Federation Force, but I would love to be proven wrong.

The fan game can be downloaded across the internet, as players frantically download and upload in hopes to keep the project alive. As always with Nintendo fan projects, download quick as they have a tendency to shut down these fantastic entries into gaming fandom.

As of now, all download links on the fan project’s page have been removed. This comes as a bit of a surprise as the game has been in the public eye for quite some time. Usually Nintendo doesn’t let these projects get finished.

Personally, I’ll be giving AM2R a shot soon. Here’s hoping the game is as good as it looks.
