Gears of War Movie Announced During Gears of War 4 Stream

Earlier tonight during the Gears of War 4 live stream, Rod Fergusson announced that Universal Pictures will be working on the long anticipated Gears of War movie. The Gears of War franchise is almost a decade old so it comes as no surprise that a movie adaptation is in the works.

Coalition Studio Head Rod Ferguson announced that a Gears of War movie was in the works during the Gears of War 4 live stream that was meant to excite Gears of War fans on the upcoming October release.  Currently, there is not much information regarding the Gears of War movie. Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark are set to produce the Gears of War movie through Universal’s Bluegrass films production company. Stuber and Clark are the producers behind Ted and the Planet of the Apes Franchise.

The Gears of War film rights were previously acquired by New Line Cinema in 2007 but after nothing came about, it was rumored that the Gears of War Movie would never see the light of day. In order for the Gears of War Movie to be successful, they will need a major budget to have proper weapons, armors, CGI, and enemies.

When asked about the Gears of War movie, Rod Fergusson had this to say, “As a way to support the franchise the next logical step was to make the movie. We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect. I think you have to let the movies be the movies. They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep back story and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie; that’s one of the great things about working with Universal. We’re finding that line where we can say it has enough lore and canon that it feels genuine to the game while at the same time going beyond that and asking ‘OK what makes a great movie?’”

Will the Gears of War movie take place before emergence day? Could it take place during the pendulum wars and recreate the interesting narrative of the Gears of War books? What enemies will be depicted in the Gears of War movie; will it be the U.I.R, the locust, the lambent, or the swarm? What characters would be appropriate for a Gears of War movie?

These are just some of the questions that Clark and Stuber will have to ask themselves while working to create the perfect Gears of War movie. Could a Gears of War movie be successful when other video game movies have failed in recent years? Hopefully, we will get to see something getting cut apart by the chainsaw of a lancer or someone explode from being shot by a gnasher.

So far there has been no announcement as to when we might see the Gears of War movie, but fans of Gears of War do not have to wait very long until they can re-enter the Gears of War universe. Gears of War 4 comes out on Xbox One on October 7th through the Ultimate Edition and on October 11th for the standard edition.
