Sword Art Online Film Slated for an Early March 2017 US Debut

Anime publisher Aniplex of America announced yesterday, that the highly-anticipated film, Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale-, would be heading to theaters across the US, in the second week of March 2017.

Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale- sees a new wearable device making its way to the Sword Art universe, the Augma, which uses Augmented Reality instead of a full-dive function. A new ARMMO-RPG, called “Ordinal Scale,” is developed specifically for the Augma, and allows players to raise their rank by collecting items that appear in real world, as well as defeating monsters, which makes the title hugely popular. Asuna and the rest of the group have been playing Ordinal Scale for a while, and as Kirito finally decides to join them, the group soon learns that it isn’t all fun and games.

Aniplex has confirmed that following its premiere event on Mar. 1, 2017, Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale- will be making its way to theaters nationwide, beginning on Mar. 9, 2017. It will be distributed by Eleven Arts, in the original Japanese audio, with English subtitles. Details on the theater locations where the film will be available, as well as tickets, will be announced at a later date, on the movie’s official site.

The Sword Art Online anime is also published in North America by Aniplex of America, and the Reki Kawahara’s light novels, from which the series is based, are published by Yen Press, along with the manga adaptations.
