Scalebound Has Been Officially Cancelled

Is There a Future for Scalebound?

Scalebound officially cancelled

One of the more interesting games shown off at E3 of last year was Scalebound. Created by Platinum Games, the amazing developers behind Bayonetta, the game starred a young warrior who listened to dubstep on his big headphones while battling alongside his dragon companion. Scalebound was one of the more unique offerings by Microsoft, which is why this news is so painful. Yes, Scalebound has officially been cancelled by Microsoft, who shared a statement with Gamespot.

Apparently, the page for Scalebound has been quietly removed from Xbox’s website, with the url now redirecting to the home page. This was coupled with a tweet from Liam Robertson, who does work with Unseen 64 and Did You Know Gaming, who heard that Scalebound could be in danger of cancellation.

This is a strange turn of events, considering the excitement that seemed to swirl around a new game from director Hideki Kamiya (Bayonetta). Also in the works was a comic book and a lore book as a collaboration with Titan Comics, detailing the strange and exciting world of Scalebound, but there is no word on whether that has also been cancelled yet either.

A Microsoft represenative gave a statement to Gamespot, which is as follows:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves, and other great experiences.”

Once again, there has been no word on whether the project will carry into another publisher. That could be messy considering contracts and the amount of marketing that was made available thanks to Microsoft. Maybe more information will be revealed at a later press event.

We will be keeping an eye out for any statements as well as make some inquiries on the subject of Scalebound. Please stay tuned to Marooners’ Rock as this story continues to develop.

Personally, this is a sad cancellation. Scalebound showed a lot of promise, both in its world and tone, as well as what was inferred in its gameplay. It reminded me of a more wild Monster Hunter in a lot of its assumed design choices, mixed with that Kamiya flair that shines so brightly in his games. I looked forward to dusting off my Xbox, specifically for Scalebound. Here’s hoping another publisher picks this up promptly. This game would make a great addition for Square Enix; Scalebound seems to fit their style.

The story of this cancellation is all thanks to the report on Gamespot.com and the statement that was shared with them. The original story can be found here.
