Overwatch China Announces Loot Box Percentages

With over 30 million people playing Overwatch, it’s no surprise that many gamers enjoy a particular element of the game. That element?

Loot boxes!

Now, thanks to Chinese business laws regarding the purchase of in-game items, Blizzard announced the drop rates for rare, epic, and legendary items in their Loot Boxes! According to Metabomb, you’ll have to open 5.5 loot boxes for an epic item and 13.5 loot boxes for a legendary item. Thanks to the math geniuses on Reddit, they’ve already done the heavy calculations for some of us non-mathematically inclined gamers!

Basically, this info translates into ~18% chance to get an epic item each time you open a loot box, and ~7% chance in getting that sweet legendary skin you’ve been eyeing for almost an entire year but you keep getting Reaper’s Mariachi skin over and over and over and over…

Okay, so maybe there’s a little bitterness involved with the loot box system, but this is all speculation for the US and other servers around the world. However, Blizzard does not have to release this type of information in the US.  No one really knows if these numbers cross over and no one seems to know if these numbers remain during special events. Let’s just say a certain author of this article (a Zenyatta main) believes the chances are increased after getting three legendary Winter Tracer skins in a row, followed by back-to-back Winter Tracer skins a box later. Happy holidays, right?

Still, if these odds are applied to US servers as well as China’s, they’re not too bad. At 13.5 loot boxes per legendary, that’s still a pretty generous drop rate when you compare it to the drop percentages of other items in Blizzard-made games (I’m looking at you, Ashes of Al’ar, and your awful ~2% drop rate!).
