Toxic Games, developer of first-person puzzler (FPP?) Q.U.B.E. and upcoming sequel Q.U.B.E. 2 released a gameplay trailer featuring much of the demo that has been playable at recent gaming conventions such as PAX West, Gamescon, and EGX.

The demo video showcases some of the narrative moments between protagonist Amelia “Lilly) Cross, and fellow survivor Emma as they face the challenges of the Q.U.B.E. in hopes of finding a way home. The two have been marooned on a beautiful, mysterious alien planet, and must solve a variety of shifting environmental puzzles if they hope to find a way home. The core puzzle gameplay is wrapped around a narrative focused on Amelia’s story and her quest for survival.

The video is a work in progress that shows an early section of the game, where the player is introduced to the functions of each colored cube. In Q.U.B.E. 2, the player now has the power to decide which cube colors are to be placed around the environment, unlike in Q.U.B.E., where that choice was fixed. The art style is somewhat reminiscent of Portal, however it certainly differentiates itself enough to make clear that this is no mere clone – Q.U.B.E. was itself a well regarded title in 2011, and this sequel appears to build well upon those lessons.

The game is scheduled for an early 2018 release on Sony’s PlaStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox One family, and PC via Steam. Developer Toxic Games added key collaborators such as David Housden, BAFTA nominated composer known for his original scores on Thomas was Alone and Volume to the team for this game, and what we hear of the music in the demo shows off Housden’s complimentary scoring.

After seeing this at PAX West’s Indie Mega Booth, we can hardly wait to get our hands on the finished product next year!
