Chalk this one up under “Things we didn’t expect to see in 2018.” BANDAI NAMCO announced today that a Gunpla (that’s Gundam models to most folks) focused game is coming exclusively for the PlayStation®4 console later this year.

We don’t know much about the game yet, beyond what’s in this trailer and a few screenshots that BANDAI NAMCO also released. From the official press release, it’s a game based around Gunpla models. Players can customize their in-game models, pick up additional parts, and build the Gundam that dreams and/or nightmares are made from. Destroyed enemies will leave parts or weapons strewn across the battlefield, making battlefield salvage an important customization aspect.

Three previous Gundam Breaker games have been released for the PlayStation®3 and PS Vita, however none of those games ever received an official North American release. The closest Western gamers have been able to do up until now is import the region free version of past games that featured English subtitles. No longer!

Oh look, new parts!

According to the Gundam wiki, previous games in the series have featured fairly typical hack and slash combat, players take their customized Gunpla models on a variety of missions that include Normal, Defend, Survival, Team Battle, and Area Gain. While players can build show-accurate models of specific Gundam units, kit-bashing (combining parts from various models to form a unique unit) is encouraged as a method of building the strongest units possible. Of course, it’s also possible to build for coolness and aesthetics alone, but Rule of Cool may not be enough to defeat a carefully crafted enemy Gundam.

Previous console entries have featured online multiplayer over PSN. Avatars, decals, and other cosmetic customization from over thirty years of Gundam shows have also been available from an in-game shop in past games. Whether these will make an appearance in NEW GUNDAM BREAKERS is unknown, but seems likely.
