ABOUT MAROONERS' ROCK
Everyone grows up; this is how the world works. Just because we grow decrepit and old, however, does not mean we have to forsake the things that make us happy, childish though they may seem. So though we grow old, we will always remain young at heart, which echoes the themes of Peter Pan.
I’m glad you mentioned Peter Pan, as it provides a wonderful segue into our explanation of Marooners’ Rock. Like the themes of Peter Pan, we will, as we grow ancient, retain our love and passion for the things we held dear in our long lost youth. However, there is more to the concept than simply enjoying what we have always enjoyed and that is excitement in the face of new experiences! This is where our long and winding story finally comes to its point: Marooners’ Rock. Peter Pan’s first genuine thrill came on Marooners’ Rock, where he thought he was going to die. His famous line at this point was, “To die will be an awfully big adventure!” We’re taking that and giving it our own spin: “To geek out will be an awfully big adventure!”
This is the core concept of Marooners’ Rock; we geek out on the things of our past, present, and future. The thrill of enjoying the things we have always enjoyed and the exhilaration of finding new things to enjoy will stay with us, and hopefully with you. Societal and cultural norms be damned!
You will get our honest opinions, without spin, bias, or pressure from anyone or anything, and vow never to sell-out to the man (unless we’re given ridiculously obscene amounts of cash to do so, because I don’t know about you, but I’d love a wall of TVs – also, I have student loans, man).
We’re just a group of people, standing (metaphorically) in front of another group of people, asking them to love us.
WHAT WE DO
Meet The Team
I’m the Ambassador of Kickyourassador. I am the Walrus. I’m on a highway to the Danger Zone. I am the Kwisatz Haderach.
I do things with words that have a generally geeky gist.
Born from another galaxy and raised in space. I’m an avid collector of Pokemon and video games. When not writing stuff on the internet you can catch me on one of my many gaming devices.
Most people bleed red. Alex bleeds pixels. Hailing from the deep mountains of WV, land of beautiful landscapes and internet scarceness, Alex can be found writing about games in every sense. Retro games are his life, spending more time with his GBA than his PS4. Drop by one of the social doodads for deep discussions about gaming!
Lindsey Revis is a Hufflepuff that hails from the northern suburbs of Chicago. She is currently studying business at the Ohio State University and enjoys spending her free time traveling, playing video games, playing board games, writing reviews, and drinking wine.
Josh wrote way too many papers throughout college but still enjoyed it. He also been a gamer since the PS1 days, so he figured he might as well combine these! Getting an opportunity to write about an industry he loves so much is something he’d been aching for in his future. Meeting developers, getting review copies, and staying up date on the industry is a blast. Now when he’s on a gaming binge session for 8 hours, its all in the name of work! Gaming has never felt so productive!
32 years ago, a legend was born. Some say, he had risen from the ashes of the fallen Atari empire, others say: He was born in Illinois and no were near California in 1985. And saved the universe twice. Kurt enjoys gaming, writing, and being good a husband. He lives with his wife and pets in Illinois.
Aaron is proof that while you can take a developer out of the game industry, it’s much harder to take the game industry out of a developer. When not at his day job, Aaron enjoys teaching Axis & Allies to his kids, writing sci-fi stories, playing classic space sims on Twitch, and riding around the American Midwest on his Harley.
Doug bashes his fists against the keyboard and eventually a piece of video is edited, arranged, exported, and uploaded with commentary, by the power of friendship and magic. Some of his gaming accomplishments are: completing a living Pokedex on the Pokebank (minus event Pokemon), 1000 pointing BCFX: Black College Football: The X-perience: the Doug Williams Edition, and only crying five times during the Kingdom Hearts series.
ADAM, or “Active Directory Application Mode,” is a new mode of Active Directory that is designed specifically for directory-enabled applications. ADAM is a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory service that runs as a user service, rather than as a system service. Single-handedly responsible for how Mass Effect 3 ends.
Harcore gaming enthusiast and diehard competitor. Former writer at Gamersbliss. When I am not involved with sports, playing videogames, or spending time with loved ones, I enjoy covering the latest anime and gaming news, doing reviews, and sharing interesting content that will make you smile.
Ahmed is not just a fanboy, but also a martial artist and an indie author who has published such fantasy adventure books as “Lunen: Triblood”.
Thom is the foremost supporter of all things glittery and awesome. While not flashmobbing (can it still be called a flashmob if he’s by himself?) innocent civilians in the grocery store while wearing a Dracula Halloween costume that’s obviously too small for him, Thom is planning his next flashmob.
Sara “Svenna” Ventura’s a journalist/PR cross-breed also working on several novels and a comic. She learned how to read from RPGs, considers Suikoden I+II two of the best games ever, and insists on Yelping everywhere she goes. RPGS, FPS, Strategy, Racing, RTS, and tabletop games are her forte. She knows conversational Japanese, Italian, and 1337. Please tweet puns at her.
Unable to label, In a moment of particular brilliance realized that he could combine all of his major passions into one! Locking himself away in the den he went to work. Almost breaking under the pressure of self criticism he was finished… Thus Daddy Gamer was born!
Taylor is an aspiring game developer and hopes to work for one of the top developers of the day: Naughty Dog. He is also the King of Backlog and any attempt at his throne will be met with failure. He enjoys games of all kinds with the exception of fighting games. He’ll play them, but he won’t like it.
Bonnie is a collector of video games, a yarn addict, and her hair color changes more often than the sun shines in Seattle. She streams on Twitch, occasionally, under the moniker squeakyb. A former writer of an indie game site, and a current purveyor of fiber crafts, she’s always looking for her next distraction. She could probably be lured into a van with an offer of cheese.
Gnome is a paramedic, writer, podcaster, and geek extraordinaire. Studying technical communications and media analysis at ASU, Gnome splits his time between podcasting with Hexes & Bows, writing game reviews, and volunteering with Extra Life! When he’s not being a real-life healer, he’s playing one in games like Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Dungeons & Dragons, and more!
Traveler, competitive eater, swag master, cookie brigadier, and promotional marketing genius. Choose one title or combine them all to figure out what Shane is on any day of the year. Also, tweet at him during PAX for cookie deliveries. (This isn’t a joke.)
Budding game artist and storyteller. I eat game narrative for breakfast and spend time wishing I could earthbend.
There’s not much to be said about Sisco. He’s just a simple kid from Brooklyn who loves video games, burritos and coke…a-cola that is! When he’s not out searching for the perfect quesadilla he’s home playing video games, new and old alike. There is only one thing that’s left to said or rather to be asked…WHERE BROOKLYN AT?!?
