Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4) Review

Final Fantasy VII is undoubtedly one of the most beloved games of my life and its accomplishments is certainly no small feat when it comes to staying power. This game singlehandedly sparked the interest of many non-RPG players around the world back in 1997 and it’s a game that’s continually had fans thirsty for more. Forgive me here, but I’m going to allude to some things that I&...[Read More]

Arc of Alchemist (PlayStation 4) Review

You know something is wrong with a game when the last thing you write in your notes is “the soundtrack is the best part of this undeveloped, poorly plotted game.” Arc of Alchemist is a JRPG that lacks about as much entertainment and artistic value as it does alchemy. Mind you, alchemy never actually comes up in the game. While Arc is functionally playable, the unrefined controls, the hackneyed cha...[Read More]

Hip-Hop JRPG Orangeblood Launches on Steam

Orangeblood, developer Grayfax Software and publisher PLAYISM’s RPG inspired by ‘90s hip-hop, sags its jeans, throws on a new t-shirt, and breaks out some fresh sneakers for its debut on PC via Steam. After watching the trailer myself, I really dig the art style as well as how the gameplay is shown off. While I’ve always been a fan of JRPG’s this is one new game you’ll want to ch...[Read More]

Ni No Kuni gets Pixel Remix Trailer

In the wake of Ni No Kuni on Switch and the Remaster on PS4 and PC, Bandai Namco have released a story trailer for the beloved JRPG with a pixelated twist. Featuring scenes from the first few hours of the game, the trailer recounts the beginning of Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch as if it were a 2D pixelated RPG.

Square Enix shows Two Radically Different Remakes at PAX West 2019

Pop-culture is currently in a state that celebrates remakes and while it can get tiresome I find myself enjoying this type of content. Risks are fewer and remakes have become more and more robust. In games, we’ve seen remakes and remasters many times over with several releases that take the original game and elevates it above and beyond with new technology and gameplay offerings. Capcom knocked it...[Read More]

Ni No Kuni – Wrath of the White Witch (Switch) Review

Studio Ghibli has become a household name, and have managed to extend fandom of their movies beyond anime fans. So when word reached me that they were going to be contributing to the design and animation of a video game, I was pretty stoked. It took me a lot longer than I would have liked to get my hands on a copy and finally play it but once I did, I enjoyed it immensely. Now, Ni No Kuni: Wrath o...[Read More]

Collection of Mana (Switch) Review

The Mana series, known as Seiken Densetsu in Japan, is unique in gaming. Even the way the series started is a tale of gaming history where an attempt to make a game in which the combat happened on the same screen as exploration ended up creating not one but multiple beloved games. The original attempt went on to become the famously good Chrono Trigger, while a new project came in the form of Final...[Read More]

The Last Remnant Remastered (Switch) Review

For most of my gaming life, Xbox consoles have been pretty much absent. PC, Nintendo, and PlayStation have always fulfilled my gaming desires. There are plenty of reasons for this, and I’m not going to bother readers in this review. Every now and then, though, a game would come out that would make me wish I had an Xbox console; The Last Remnant was one of those games. As a big fan of JRPGs, to hav...[Read More]

NIS America E3 2019 Line-up Features Trails of Cold Steel III and More

On June 11th, we had the opportunity to meet with NIS America at Triple 8 China Bar & Grill for a spread of excellent Chinese dishes and to check out the latest JRPGs. Just like any other scheduled event, our appointment with NIS America did not go quite as expected. Now that’s not to say it was horrible, let alone bad, just different. We started out the appointment by helping NIS Americ...[Read More]

Cris Tales – Demo Impressions

One of the cooler little games shown during Microsoft’s E3 press conference was a vibrant little RPG named Cris Tales which promises to be a love letter to JRPGs from all eras. I wanted to know more about it as the video looked neat, but I needed to get my hands on it, so I downloaded the demo from Steam.

The ’90s Were Weird – YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG Review (PC)

1999 was a weird year. Boy bands and Brittney Spears ruled the airwaves, the dot.com bubble was at peak inflation, the New England Patriots weren’t an unstoppable NFL juggernaut, and by the time the year was half over, people were getting seriously worried that January 1, 2000 would herald the end of the world thanks to a massive computer bug. Against this backdrop of global paranoi comes YIIK: A ...[Read More]
