Judgment (Xbox Series X) Review – Beyond the Yakuza

At E3 2019, we had the opportunity to meet with Sega and Atlus to preview their upcoming 2019 and 2020 releases. At the time, we did not know this would potentially be the last physical E3. During our preview, Sega gave us a hands-on preview of Catherine: Full Body, Mario & Sonic Olympics, and Judgment. All three titles were enjoyable, but Catherine caught our eyes the most; however, this did ...[Read More]

Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Steam) Review

In the last few years, the Yakuza series and the saga of Kazuma Kiryu has risen from hidden gem to arguably Sega’s strongest franchise. Known for its over-the-top drama blended with wacky, extreme comedy and larger-than-life personalities, the Yakuza series has over time risen above the initial false assumption that it is “GTA Japan”.  The game series is actually more of a slice-of-life braw...[Read More]

Yakuza Remastered Collection (PS4) Review

Having a series span generations of consoles is not unusual. After all, why wouldn’t a successful game series want to push onward into the next iteration of hardware? We’ve seen this happen for decades now. There’s the current trend of remaking, remastering, or releasing modern console ports of older games that are making developers and publishers take a long hard look at their libraries. This is ...[Read More]

Judgment (PS4) Review

Strangely enough, I haven’t played much of the acclaimed Yakuza series, even though I’ve had a want to do so after many of the games got remade for the PS4 and have been the subject of a lot of discussion from other critics and creators I follow. Lucky for me, I was granted a chance at the series (kinda) by reviewing Judgment for PS4, a new game from the same developers that takes place in the sam...[Read More]

Yakuza Kiwami 2 Review: A Step Forward In The Franchise

It’s quite impressive how much the Yakuza series has managed to stay relevant after all these years. The franchise began it’s story back in the PS2 era, and staying popular enough to work it’s way up to the current generation of consoles. Yakuza 6 was the first game to be released on the PS4, taking advantage of the brand-new Dragon Engine. Yakuza 6 looks to be the last main story of protagonist K...[Read More]

Yakuza Kiwami (PlayStation 4) Review

Yakuza Kiwami is a complete remake of the original Yakuza, but also a sort of sequel to the recent prequel, Yakuza 0 (that was a mouthful). The original game was released over a decade ago in 2005, and has now been built from scratch with the Yakuza 0 engine. While remakes are going to implement a sense of nostalgia for fans of the original game, this remake also serves as a continuation to the fr...[Read More]
