In the dystopian chaos of 2020, one game stealthily sneaked its way onto gaming consoles. That game was Ghostrunner a cyberpunk first-person stealth action game woven with the attention to old-fashioned first-person classics and indie games such as Hotline Miami. Having found solid success in its multiplatform release, the team has announced new game modes and a sequel to Ghostrunner no small feat given the game sharing the same genre as last year’s highly anticipated CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077.

The news comes via a press release provided by AJ Trulion of Stride PR. Ghostrunner was released in Fall of 2020 for PS4 and Xbox One, then subsequently release onto Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Following the solid success, Ghostrunner has received, the team has decided to create a new wave-based mode that challenges players to constantly challenging waves of enemies. Roguelike elements are introduced in the Wave Mode, making the ascension in the Cybervid an entirely new experience. For those dreading the ascension in Wave Mode, the developers of Ghostrunner have stated that death only means beginning at the wave players died at, and not from the very beginning.

Assist Mode

Additionally, a new Assist Mode will be added to Ghostrunner. This assist mode gives players a few more chances before dying, layering the player with some armor. The Assist Mode encourages players to enjoy the story and gameplay of Ghostrunner without worrying too much of impending death. The base game has a one-hit death mechanic to the player, and as Ghostrunner combines urban parkour and cybernetic combat, staying alive is very difficult. Fortunately, the Assist Mode is aimed to make the game more enjoyable for those looking to enjoy the world and story of Ghostrunner. Finally, the team has announced a sequel to Ghostrunner and while the details were scarce, it is confirmed to be heading to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

Backstory

Ghostrunner takes place in a dystopic cyberpunk world, inside a gargantuan tower, known as Dharma Tower. Following a global calamity, the last vestiges of humanity remain in the tower. Players play as an enhanced, cybernetic ninja, known as a Ghostrunner, a peacekeeping warrior that has traded their organic humanity for synthetic parts and upgrades, making them swift and lethal. As the Ghostrunner awakens with no memory, he is thrust into a world of conspiracy to ascend the tower, defeat his enemies and stop the malevolent plans of the corrupt cyborg, Mara. Players utilize a variety of cybernetically augmented moves and techniques to wall run, vault cover, deflect bullets, and slice through enemies. Ghostrunners’ success has been one of remarkable achievement.

Currently, the game’s listing on steam has it in “Very Positive” ratings out of over 18,000 user reviews, and Ghostrunner just made its way to the Nintendo Switch. As the game launched within the atmosphere of the massive launch of Cyberpunk 2077, it took the risk of running awash in the noise of the term cyberpunk. Fortunately, Ghostrunner has slived its way through the competition, becoming a remarkable action game with a new audience and perhaps a new future. Having played the game at PAX EAST 2020, right before the Pandemic struck, I am incredibly pleased and happy for the sales success and critical reception of Ghostrunner, and hopefully, this will encourage other developers to continue to pursue the cyberpunk genre in new and interesting
ways.

Ghostrunner is now available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Amazon Luna, and Steam.
