Samurai Maiden Announced, Launching on PlayStation

Gen Z comes to Japan to slay The Demon King. D3 Publisher and Shade Inc. have announced Samurai Maiden, a new action-packed hack’n’slash for the upcoming winter season. Samurai Maiden features a young woman from the present who gets transported to fight in one of the most turbulent time periods in ancient Japan: the Honnō-ji Incident during the Sengoku period.

The announcement trailer debuts our protagonist, a young woman form the future, who has come to this violent time in Japan’s history to fight as a Samurai Maiden. The trailer shows the hero, who is presumed to be Tsumugi Tamaori, fighting and slashing her way through the evil demons that have arisen in Japan. We see plenty of slashing and action, including our hero tapping into untapped skills and magic to fight the hordes. Accompanying her are other girls, presumably from the same time period. Each girl has their own weapons and battle form, including one fox girl which seemingly drops a massive hammer on a powerful enemy. The rest of the trailer highlights the cell-shaded anime art style, and even teases some romance towards the end. Samurai Maiden looks to be a unique action experience, where sword and Ninjitsu action are combined into one action-packed experience. The Japanese voice cast has been announced and includes Yuki Yomichi as Tsumugi Tamaori. Not much is known about Samurai Maiden but with an impending release date of this winter, more will certainly be revealed soon.

D3 Publisher has released games that remind you why games are so much fun to begin with. I became a fan of D3 Publisher in 2016, when Earth Defense Force 2: Invaders from Planet Space landed on PlayStation Vita, and Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair was made available on PlayStation 4. The two games wore what they had on their sleeves, which included tight twin-stick shooting gameplay akin to Robotron 2084 and a B-rated sci-fi atmosphere with bad voice acting and visuals that resemble a late PS2 game, all running at a high framerate. I played Invaders from Planet Space for well over a hundred hours, slaying alien after alien, passing away the time at my not-so-good part-time job. I’m a firm believer we need more genuinely silly and fun games these days, and Samurai Maiden looks to fit a unique space for those looking for something quick and easy to play, but also a blast to spend time with.

Samurai Maiden launches on PlayStation 4 and 5, Steam, and Nintendo Switch this coming winter 2022.
