Gunnar Glasses: Fallout Vault 33 Edition Review

I didn’t fully grasp the wide breadth of style and pure ambition from the folks over at GUNNAR who provided us with a pair of their Fallout Vault 33 glasses. Coinciding with the release of the Amazon Prime show, these Fallout-themed spectacles provided me with even more ease while also providing me with a sense of comfort. Similar to the Call of Duty glasses I reviewed before, GUNNAR embraces themes and they really impressed me with this pair.

From the moment I opened the package from GUNNAR and felt the pure heft of the case wrapped in the protective foam, I was caught off guard. Unraveling the white foam revealed a solid metal case adorned with a blue finish with some yellow accenting, reminiscent of the Vault Dweller’s outfit from the games and the show. While the case was smooth, there are two bands that adorn the outside with a few rivets bubbling up, giving that Neo-industrial look that the series is known for. I genuinely smiled at this presentation knowing how perfectly they nailed this aesthetic.

Opening the case, I felt the tightness of the hinge which does break in after a few uses but never wears out completely. There is a genuine snap when the metal case closes and it doesn’t open easily, keeping the glasses secure within this metal coffin. This is a plus from GUNNAR for those who wear glasses and need a means to keep their glasses safe. Plus, the colors of the case will make sure it’s something you will be able to point out in any room you happen to place it.

Inside is a Fallout-themed cleaning cloth for the lenses as well as a blue and yellow drawstring bag that holds the glasses. I opened it and much to my surprise I saw this pair of glasses that represents the other side of the Fallout universe- a retro-futuristic motif with large lenses. The frames around the lenses had this olive, militaristic gunmetal, and olive color scheme with a slight emphasis on the end pieces which flared out just a tiny bit and felt reminiscent of the 1920’s style. Thin aluminum arms and thick temple tips, while looking structurally weak, offered a tight grip that felt strange at first but fades the longer you wear them.

GUNNAR is known for having glasses in many styles and colors and when it comes to the Fallout Glasses they offer two lens types, clear and amber which happen to block 35 and 65% of all blue light, respectively. The clear style that was sent to me provided me with ample relief while retaining colorization pretty well. As I use an ultra-wide style monitor, the large lenses felt just right by providing me with ample coverage.

Overall, I like the Fallout Vault 33 glasses and I felt that GUNNAR nailed the aesthetics perfectly when it comes to the theme of Fallout. The feel as they sit on my face is surprising and I instantly noticed how lightweight they felt despite the large, thick rims. Fallout fans will enjoy this pair if they are looking for a solid pair.

Of course, GUNNAR enables you to buy this pair with a prescription (which opens up additional lens styles), as well as a sunglasses variant that blocks 90% of all blue light. You can grab a pair of the Fallout Vault 33 glasses at $99.00, but the prescription version will cost $249.00, and some insurance companies may cover it. So it doesn’t hurt to look into your provider and see what the cost will be or what’s covered by your provider.
