Hardware Review – Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 Intercept Glasses By GUNNAR Optiks

We don’t know whether GUNNAR Optik’s new special edition tie-in with Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will actually make wearers better at that specific game. What we can say is that they will make wearers better at just about everything else they do on a screen.

Let’s get this clear first: the special edition Division 2 Intercept glasses work just as well with games other than Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. For this review, I tested them against several other games and programs including Langrisser on my iPhone, Warplanes: WWII Dogfight on the Nintendo Switch (review coming soon), and YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG. I even used the glasses for non-gaming activities such as spreadsheets, web browsing, and video editing. At no time did the glasses fail to function, or threaten to explode because they weren’t being used to play the game they are associated with.

In design and form factor terms, the Division 2 version of GUNNAR’s Intercept glasses are identical to their non-special edition brothers. The thing which sets these apart is the unique black and orange color scheme, a special soft case, and even a specially printed box. Functionally, I found the Intercept glasses more comfortable than either the GUNNAR Riot or GUNNAR Torpedo glasses which I’ve previously reviewed. The lens size is somewhere between the Riot and Torpedo lenses, providing a wider amount of coverage without the massive frames protruding into peripheral vision.

Fashion is very much in the eye of the beholder with these glasses. People who like a large, chunky pair of frames will love these. Folks who prefer a very minimal frame may want to look for a different product from the GUNNAR catalog. The black-and-orange color style is definitely distinctive. Unlike the regular Onyx Intercept glasses, there’s no mistaking these for a normal pair of reading or prescription glasses.

Like the other Intercept frames, however, these special edition glasses can be had with prescription lens. While the ones furnished for review were not prescription, I did wear them multiple times for 8+ hours and found them extremely comfortable. Despite the bulky size, the glasses never started sliding down my nose or pinching the sides of my head. Anyone who’s ever found themselves with a headache at the end of a day wearing tight-fitting eyewear can attest to how unpleasant that sensation can be.

Gunnar’s special edition Intercept glasses come with a custom carrying case and paint job.

One perk of the chunky frames is that they feel nice and solid. The side pieces seem quite durable, and the hinges have a good amount of resistance. The screws are easy to access should wearers want to tighten or loosen the movement a little bit.

With a retail MSRP of $79.99, the Division 2 Intercept glasses slot slightly above the entry level Riot frames, and right alongside the Torpedo glasses. The lenses feature a 65 Blue Light rating for the level of protection that they provide.

A pair of Special Edition Division 2 Intercept glasses were provided by GUNNAR Optiks for this review. Find out more about GUNNAR Optiks at their website, or on their Twitter page.
