Aliens have arrived and successfully destroyed the entire planet! Whatever their reasons, whether it be jealousy, competition, or anger management an entire alien armada has successfully decimated the planet. Fortunately, there was a well-funded, established back up plan. Three mammoth capital ships quietly escaped the destruction of Earth, carrying human survivors en route to a new home in the depths of space. Regrettably, a contingent of alien ships have caught on to this escape, and as they seek to completely eradicate all traces of humanity. They may be powerful, but what they didn’t count on was a lone, dangerous, security robot, programmed to kill with an attitude. From Cybernate and Fellow Traveler comes Super Mutant Alien Assault, an arcade platform shooter inspired by Super Crate Box. Featuring an assortment of weapons, gruesome interstellar violence, and a killer Dubstep soundtrack, Super Mutant Alien Assault provides a compact and straightforward action experience with style and substance.
Super Mutant Alien Assault is based on Super Crate Box, a similar game by Nuclear Throne developers, Vlambeer. In the Super Crate Box , the player fights a large number of enemies set across a single-stage, using jumping and shooting to stay alive and win. Super Mutant Alien Assault plays in a similar vein, where players fight ruthless mutant alien hordes to protect the last humans, who are suspended in stasis. As a security bot, players are given access to special skills and a plethora of new and familiar weapons, all in an effort to successfully complete the mission.
The aliens are smart, grotesque, bulbous, and ready to exterminate all they see fit. Fortunately, in Super Mutant Alien Assault, you have access to weapons, such as handguns, laser rifles, sniper rifles, and the old-reliable itself, the AK-47. The enemies come through doors and ventilation shafts in great numbers, but they can mutate and strengthen themselves as they are continuously exposed to the nuclear cores of the ships. In addition to defending the ship, players will need to perform small tasks in the face of the bloody mayhem. This includes moving engine cores, depressurizing heat levels, and preparing the ship for hyperdrive. Using special abilities, such as the dash and the plasma beam can switch the tide quickly in your favor, but can the enemy overwhelm the player, meaning that quick response and attention is essential.
Playing Super Mutant Alien Assault is thrilling arcade fun; jumping and slaying aliens in violent, pixelated fashion is a blast. The gameplay provides a solid challenge and is responsive, fun, and simple. Of course, Super Mutant Alien Assault touts its dubstep soundtrack, and naturally, the soundtrack is incredible, dropping the bass at the most perfect moments. Playing solo is one way to enjoy Super Mutant Alien Assault, but you can also play with another player, sweetening the arcade action.
The only real drawback Super Mutant Alien Assault is the compact nature of the game. There are three ships, each with several stages and a boss fight. There are several difficulty modes and an arcade mode for grizzled players to complete all three ships in one go. However, with the exception of these modes, there isn’t any additional content. The game has seen releases on various platforms, including the PlayStation Vita. It would have been a nice gesture to include exclusive content for the Nintendo Switch, such as new levels or weapons. However, what is present is a solid adventure, especially for those on the go.
Guns, violence, dubstep is all you need in Super Mutant Alien Assault. Its gameplay is smooth and exciting, the explosions of alien bodies is enjoyable, and the killer soundtrack turns the intergalactic slaughter into a party for the cosmos. While short and compact, Super Mutant Alien Assault is fun and should be in every Switch owner’s library.
