In this new series of graphic novels, the Earth One line is going to “Ultimatize” the DC universe like Marvel did in their Ultimate line with a new and modern take on their characters. First up: Superman as written by J. Michael Straczynski and as drawn by Shane Davis. Now I have to tell you guys, I could not be more excited about this. As much as I like Marvel, there is just something grand and majestic about the DC universe. Sure, sometimes it delves too deep into the absurd and features characters along the lines of Matter Eater Lad, and their continuity is a nightmare in terms of actually making sense. But it still puts out this sense of wonder and awe that I just can’t find with Marvel. So its very exciting that we’re getting a series like Earth One, a way of rebooting the continuity without having to throw out the rest of the continuity.
Now in case you don’t know about the Ultimate concept, Marvel started the Ultimate line in 2000 as a way of restarting their characters for a younger audience that wasn’t familiar with their characters and couldn’t jump into the continuity heavy main titles. Earth One will be like that, except instead of being written in individual comic books they will be released as 130 page graphic novels. Its a really cool idea and hopefully it goes better than Ultimate did for Marvel. You don’t want me to get started on Ultimatum…damn you Jeph Loeb…
Okay, enough of my talking. Go below to get a quick glimpse of Clark’s first few days in Metropolis before he first dons the red and blue tights. For the rest of the 125 or so pages, you’ll just have to wait until October 27th like the rest of us.
