Some sad news regarding the gaming industry hit today: Bizarre Creations, makers of the amazing racing game, Blur, and the minds behind other well-known titles like Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2 and Project Gotham Racing, is either shut down or is about to be.
The news hit Twitter today like a firestorm with speculation running high as to whether or not poor sales of Bizarre titles were the reasons behind this decision, and there are rumors swirling around that layoffs have already begun at Activision. Needless to say, their fans are not thrilled at all.
Geometry Wars was one of the games on Xbox Live Arcade where if you didn’t have it, people wondered why. Sure, it wasn’t a game where several sequels could be easily made, like with other genres, but it was a title that stood out amongst the pack, and had a large following. Same goes for Blur, the dynamic racing game that captured the hearts of many, including myself. As a fan of some, not all, racing games, I found Blur to be a much needed breath of fresh air. The graphics were crisp, the online multi-player was incredibly well designed, and the gameplay was a true delight. Blur is, hands down, one of the best racing games I have ever played in my life, and I am proud to have that game sitting on my shelf.
While no official statement has been released from Activision or Bizarre, rarely does the internet and the gaming community get things like this wrong. With roughly 200 individuals potentially out of a job, this couldn’t come at a worse time with Thanksgiving next week and Christmas around the corner. Hopefully there will be another company that sees the brilliant potential in Bizarre Creations because that team is really talented and has a lot of potential.
