Top 33 Rock Singers: #32 Chris Martin

Now, before you all start to flame me about how Coldplay isn’t “rock”, it technically can be considered a branch off of that genre. The same way a person could say that Thom Yorke and Radiohead could be as well. I love Coldplay, and I’m not afraid to admit it. I don’t think it’s a rip off of U2, and there is no denying that they make some fantastic music. Chris Martin, the energetic, politically charged frontman is a perfect fit and is my #32.

I remember many years ago when I heard this strange song called “Yellow” on the radio only to find out that it was by some band named Coldplay and they were from the UK. It got played out, and to this day I’m a little sick of it, but from that one song I knew that more great music was to come.

Martin has a beautiful, smooth, and sometimes haunting voice that can really make each word he sings have life and emotion. Not only does he have great range, but he has the power to project and really get those notes out there when necessary. My favorite album of theirs, X&Y, really shows off Martin’s depth as a singer and a songwriter. Between the pop tunes like “Speed of Sound” or the gorgeously romantic “Fix You”, Martin’s voice never ceased to touch me, and at times it has brought me to tears.

While I can’t say that Chris Martin will be one of those singers we’ll look back and say he was one of the greatest of all time, he is, without a doubt, one of the best ones out there right now, and sadly underrated. One day I hope I get to experience Martin’s talents live.
