In case you missed Spike TV’s 2010 Video Game Awards, we’ve got you covered! Check out everything that happened!
Neil Patrick Harris hosted Spike TV’s Video Game Awards and opened the show with several suited dancers, which he brought to a quick stop by gunning them all down.
Next up, they showed a video for Call of Duty: Black Ops, which is nominated for Game of the Year. Shortly thereafter, they showed a video for Batman: Arkham City, complete with character statues on stage! Looked pretty amazing! Then, Olivia Munn gave the award for Studio of the Year. The nominees were: BioWare, Bungie, Blizzard and RockStar San Diego with BioWare winning. Which, most people expected!
Dane Cook then made an appearance going over the first nominee for Character of the Year. First nominee is Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood’s Ezio. Todd Howard then took the stage. For those who are unaware, Howard is a game designer working with Bethesda. He announced Elder Scrolls V – Skyrim, out November 11, 2011.
As expected, Mortal Kombat made their special announcement! Kratos, from the well known God of War franchise is going to be available as a special character in the next MK game! Which was a great lead-in, as Kratos was the next character up for Character of the Year. The world premier of Thor: God of Thunder was up next. Looked alright – definitely better than Iron Man 2 which came out earlier this year! You can catch Thor: God of Thunder on May 3.
Chris Hermsworth, the actor portraying Thor in the upcoming movie then announced the award for Best Action/Adventure game, which unsurprisingly went to Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. It beat out Read Dead Redemption, God of War III and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
It was then announced that Mass Effect 2 is up for Game of the Year. Then, they announced Mass Effect 3 will be released during the 2011 holiday season. Then, Best Shooter Award was announced: beating out Battlefield: Bad Company 2, BioShock 2 and Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops took home the award!
Then, of course, they showed a trailer for the highly anticipated Resistance 3, which hits shelves September 6. Then, to continue on with the Character of the Year nominees, they announced John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. Then, they showed an amazing video for God of War III, and Dane Cook took the stage again to announce Call of Duty: Black Ops’ Sgt. Woods as a nominee for Character of the Year.
Next, Rachel Bilson announced the nominees for Best Performance by a Human Male: Gary Oldman as Sgt. Reznov and Sam Worthington as Alex Mason (Call of Duty: Black Ops), John Cleese as Jasper (Fable III), Martin Sheen as Illusive Man (Mass Effect 2), Nathan Fillion as Sgt. Edward Buck (Halo: Reach), Neil Patrick Harris as Peter Parker (Spider Man), Rob Wierhoff as John Marston (Read Dead Redemption). Of course, the VGA host took the award for his performance as Spider Man / Peter Parker.
Tony Hawk then took the stage to announce the Prototype 2 world premier– which actually looked kind of cool! It’s out in 2012! Next, Guillermo del Toro took the stage to announce Insane, coming 2013 from THQ and Volition. Best Indie Game: Limbo took that award! Which, in our opinion, was up against some pretty amazing games! Then, the world premier of Portal 2!
Then, they went through a whole list of games! Best Driving Game was Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Best Adapted Video Games was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Most Anticipated Game is Portal 2. Best RPG is Mass Effect 2. Best Music Game is Rock Band 3. Best Soundtrack is DJ Hero 2.
Michael Chilis then took the stage and was talking about Red Dead Redemption being nominated for Game of the Year; saying the game is a truly cinematic experience and soundtrack. Jose Gonzalez then played “Far Away” from the soundtrack.
Forza 4 was then announced with a release date of Fall 2011. After some rather unnecessary celebrity “fillers”, they got back into the swing of things, and announced the world premier of SSX. Dane Cook then announced Sgt. Woods as the winner of Character of the Year, which, personally, I disagree with. My favorite actress ever, Eliza Dushku, then took the stage to announce the world premier of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. This video looked AMAZING! Expected release date is November 1!
Finally, to end the whole production, Red Dead Redemption took home the award for Game of the Year! Which, honestly, was a surprise! Red Dead Redemption also took home Best Song in a Game and Best DLC.
