That sound you hear? That is every bit of my rage concentrated into a pure form of energy and being shot out into the universe, vibrating every single molecule in existence. What a horrid sound it is. What, you think this lead in is over dramatic? I don’t!
Why? Why did this thing happen? I don’t understand it. I mean, yeah it had a rough development. But it was also one of the main reasons people were so hyped for the 3DS. The fact that Capcom was bringing this franchise back, in glasses-less 3D no less, was a huge thing for a rather loyal legion of fans. Capcom itself even supported it, using fan interaction to create hype for the now non-existent game by using fan designs for characters and what have you. And now its gone.
Here’s what Capcom has said, straight from the horse’s mouth:
We’d like to thank you for your ongoing loyal support of Mega Man Legends 3. Today, however, we must regrettably announce the discontinuation of this project.
From the outset the MML3 Project was intended to give gamers across the world insight and input into the development process. Part of this process includes an assessment of whether the title will go into full production, and is based on a number of criteria with input from different sectors of the company.
Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game. Additionally, updates of the Mega Man Legends Developer Room will cease as of today, though the North American Developer Room and its forums will remain open indefinitely.
We can only express our deepest apologies to all of you who have lent us your unending support, including participation in the Mega Man Legends 3 Developer Room. On behalf of the entire Legends team, please accept our sincere apology for failing to meet the expectations of the fans.
We thank you all so much for your extended support of this title and this community, and we hope that you will continue to support the Mega Man franchise as well as other Capcom games.
Now I just have to wonder about a few things. For starters, what does this mean for the Mega Man franchise? First Universe was cancelled, that was a hard enough blow. That was good ol’ side-scrolling action again, but at least we had this to look forward to. Now? What else is there for Mega Man fans to look forward to? The classic series has nothing, nor does X. Legends is dead. What about Battle Network or Star Force? Any news about a new entry there? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
This also throws into doubt the immediate future of the 3DS. Legends 3 was one of the upcoming heavy-hitters for the system. It was also a heavily anticipated third party game. Now all the big games I can think of that are coming out for the system are first party games, which is the problem of every damn Nintendo system nowadays!
So yeah, a rather bleak bit of news this is. Feeling really bummed out right now. I guess I’ll go take a shot and…I dunno…play Mega Man 2 or something. Blowing up Flash Man always makes me feel better.
