Review: Power Capes

Review: Power Capes

Do you remember, as a child, rummaging through the linen or towel closet to find the perfect cape? Did you tie two of the corners on the shorter end together around your neck and run around the house making whooshing noises? Did you accidentally knock down and destroy your parents’ expensive anniversary-style rotating pendulum clock? If so, then we had similar childhoods. It’s been many years since I dug around for an imaginary cape, but now I’ll never have to do it again. Why? POWER CAPES.

I want to preface this by saying that this entire review is absolutely genuine, and not meant as sarcasm. I genuinely love running around the house wearing a cape, and Power Capes has made it possible to do that with something a little more stylish than a throw-blanket or sheet. Seriously.

Each Power Cape is hand-stitched. The stitching is very thorough, and after two weeks of frequent (and at times abusive) use, I have not had any problems with the integrity of the cape in any way. It may be a light material, but it is durable. The Velcro at the neck is positioned so that it doesn’t scratch or chafe as you zoom through your living space (or public park, if you’re brave). The only problem with the fit is that you can’t adjust where it hangs on your shoulders. The neck cut is what the neck cut is, so it may hang a little farther back than you’d prefer.

The selection of emblems is limited, and none of them are as dramatic or serious as I’d prefer. The font used for the letters that can be selected as the emblem, or within an emblem, is also a very cartoony font. It’s obvious that the primary target market for Power Capes is children. I was able to use the diamond shield emblem with the capital “T” and get a fairly decent looking logo for my cape. It resulted in a less cartoony look, by far, but that is a rare combination from the selection offered.

Why, yes. I AM aware of just how stupid I look. I happen not to care in the slightest.

Whether it’s for a Halloween costume, or just to fly around the house on your own (or with your kids), Power Capes are a good buy, if you don’t mind semi-generic emblems and a cartoonish font. I think the biggest market for this would be comic fans with young kids. If you want to find a way to introduce your kids to comics while having a lot of fun, or if you just like playing superheroes with your kids, a Power Cape makes it much more fun. Perhaps in the future they’ll introduce the option for custom emblems and logos. One can only hope!
