Steam has become one of the most recognizable and respected digital distribution platforms in video games. From its ease of use to its shiny interface, and from its wide selection to its wallet busting sales and deals, PC and Mac gamers, for the most part, love Steam for buying and managing their games, as well as building a community of friends and competitors. Now, nearly a decade after the platform’s initial release, Steam is packing up and going mobile with a Steam Mobile app for iOS and Android devices.
The app is currently in beta, and promises almost full client functionality on your mobile device. From Gabe Newell:
The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers. Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for and upcoming game, or catching a sale – these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way [sic] people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone.
The app is currently available in both app marketplaces for free, but access to the beta functionality is still restricted on an invitation only basis. Signing in to the app submits your account for beta consideration, so download the app and get on the list!
