Marvel Comics has had a real hard-on lately for “events” in their universe. Eschewing the path of simply allowing characters to play out their own adventures and missions within their own titles, Earth 616 has seen back to back, and often simultaneous, major events bringing their world’s cast together in collaboration and in conflict. So far, since 2010, we have seen more events within the Marvel Universe than the entire decade of the 1990s. That aside, their newest upcoming event will pit the Avengers against the X-Men in a battle over the Phoenix.
I’ll admit, I’ve fallen severely behind on my Marvel comics. My last real understanding of the Marvel Universe comes from House of M, Planet Hulk, Civil War, The Death of Captain America, and World War Hulk. I’m about five years behind the times as far as Marvel is concerned, so seeing the current X-Men line-up including someone like Magneto, and Colossus adding the powers of Juggernaut to his repertoire (I like to call the new Colossus by the name Cologgernaut), really throws me for a proverbial loop. On top of it all is seeing Cyclops turn into Magneto’s ideological duplicate. He always was a bit of a jacktard, though.
Well, the Phoenix is returning, and the battle is taking shape. Avengers vs. X-Men. Hero vs. Hero. Check out the seven page preview below and let us know which side you’re on.
