In October 2011, Blizzard announced a charity auction in which they would sell their old server architecture. Interested parties could bid on the blades for their favorite World of Warcraft servers with the proceeds going to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. While the prices were a bit high for me, I found the idea and the cause to be compelling and novel. For those of us who have played WoW since launch, those servers are something like a second home and I would have loved to display one of the blades from Lightbringer, Azuremyst, or Feathermoon proudly in my own home.
The auctions are now closed and the final tally is in. While the headline may say it all, I’ll throw in Blizzard’s official announcement here.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the World of Warcraft® community around the world who took part in our recent server-blade charity auction, we’ve raised more than $330,000 USD to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.
In October 2011, we announced that a selection of retired World of Warcraft server blades — hardware that once housed World of Warcraft realms — would be made available for auction for this great cause, and you responded by opening up your hearts and your guild banks. Thanks again for your support and for helping to make a difference in the lives of children.
This is amazing news for St Jude’s and for all the children in its care.
