The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers is one of the earliest shows I remember watching as a child. Therefore, I will admit I have a lot of nostalgia for the monster-of-the-week formula, chilling out at juice bars, and robots fitting together into one super cool robot. Sure, the shows are campy, often poor representations of their Japanese counterparts. Yet, I still love the series. Coming in March 2017, theaters will become host to waves of fans, while also appealing to new comers with the edgy direction, with the new Power Rangers film.
Revealed by Entertainment Weekly, the suits have a look akin to the Iron Man art style found in the films, with rippling layers of metal. The suits are also slightly transparent and are less of a suit and more of a direct transformation of the teenagers. Of course, the actors have already been announced as well: Becky G as Trini, Ludi Lin as Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Jason, Naomi Scott as Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Billy. Each of them definitely fit the look of the old cast.
The film’s villain is Rita Repulsa, the witch imprisoned on the moon who was uncovered by astronauts in the original series. In regards to her design, there is definitely something going on with her character in relation to the oddly absent Green Power Ranger. The Green Power Ranger of the main series started out as a villain, a slave to Rita’s dark wishes, who later gained redemption and joined the team as the white ranger. Once again, there is no word on if the Green Ranger will make an appearance, nor has any actor been credited for the role. The original actor Jason David Frank has said that he is interested in helping out the film, so his appearance in some shape or form is likely. Either way, I’m sure the film will make some sort of mention about the sixth ranger, being as he was so important to the story and one of the most beloved characters by fans.
Do the new Power Ranger suits do the series justice? Let us know in the comments below or on our social media pages. Personally, I think the new designs are awesome and can’t wait to see them in action. Hopefully the film isn’t just Hollywood cashing in on nostalgia like the Transformers films, but time will tell. Either way March is looking to be an awesome month next year with this and the launch of the Nintendo NX.
