Being my favorite game series, I have always looked forward to playing each new title. For each title is a piece of the puzzle that gets more and more convoluted, but more fleshed out. It is a fascinating conundrum. I was concerned for Kingdom Hearts 3 since I only have an Xbox One, but then they announced it for both consoles, so mission accomplished, right? No. Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue was announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive with new content. So what do I do now? Do I just buy a PlayStation 4 to enjoy it or do I just wait it out? Well, I think I am going to have to wait it out.
2.8 will have three stories in it; this has been known for a while: Dream Drop Distance HD, Unchained X Back Cover (as a film) and 0.2 Birth By Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage. This last portion is about Aqua in the realm of darkness, so it is almost just a proof of concept with the new fighting style and graphics. It has been said that it will last about the length of a standard world in Kingdom Hearts 3, so possibly a couple hours long. Add this with Back Cover (about an hour long) and you are getting right around five hours of new content. That’s it.
While yes, I agree we are getting the remastered Dream Drop Distance with it, which is between 12 and 25 hours long depending on your playstyle, that is not that much content for a full priced game, especially since it is an 90/10 split on new content. This morning it was announced that 2.8 will be getting a free pre-order upgrade to the collector’s edition. What is in said collector’s edition? For most, sadness and disappointment. It is a Disney trading pin, that says Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and it has King Mickey and Sora on it. While yes, it is a lovely pin, Square Enix is not selling this title very well to people on the fence. So in one sense, yes, I am sad that I am not able to play it, but in the other, would I really want to spend $60 to get five-ish new hours of content?
What do you all think? Is this ridiculous to be upset about, or is this an example of remastered titles over stepping their boundaries? Either way, this seems like the last stop before we get to Kingdom Hearts 3. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is due out January 24th, 2017. So, all aboard the hype train?
