Building computers is a fascinating hobby when making them for gaming. I’ve seen some crazy builds by some friends, as well as the insane projects from people around the world. This sort of epic PC never really translated well into Laptops, with only a select group of companies actually making systems capable at high level gaming. Acer has changed the game with their new Predator 21 X series of laptops starting at an astounding $8,999 retail price.
With that kind of cash, what sort of monster are we dealing with here? For starters, the Predator features a 7th generation (Kaby Lake) Intel Core i7-7820HK processor paired with two GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs in SLI. Yes, two GeForce graphics cards in a single laptop. Crazy right?
Visually, users will be looking at the laptop’s native 2560×1080 resolution with 120Hz refresh rate (G-Sync is also supported) all on a 21-inch curved IPS panel. So far so good, Acer is certainly touting the Predator as the first laptop with a curved screen. Personally, I haven’t even moved into HDR monitors, let alone a curved one.
On the memory side, this laptop sports 64GB of DDR4-2400, which is borderline insane as most machines get by with 8GB and really only the determined run 32GB. There is also a 512GB solid state drive with three additional slots plus a 1TB HDD for bulk storage, although there is not an official listing for the amount of space for each retail release. Some builds may have more space built in.
The keyboard is a mechanical one packed with Cherry MX Brown switches with per-key lighting. Acer is also including a set of caps for WASD, which come in teal to stand out. Just above the keyboard is a maintenance panel, giving the user easy access to upgrades for the RAM and one of the 2.5 inch drives. The full number pad also flips over to function as a precision touch pad, for those that need it.
The Predator 21 X is launching sometime in February with the first 300 getting a numbered limited edition. Each laptop also comes with a hard shell carrying case.
