Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, True Detective, Now You See Me) is joining the cast of the upcoming Han Solo film due next year.
Alongside Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), and Emilia Clarke (Unnamed Role #1), Harrelson is bound to bring some humor and snark to a film about smugglers and scoundrels.
“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” said the film’s directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.”
With Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm and Star Wars, they have decided to tell side stories that aren’t directly related to the Skywalker family, which they call “Star Wars Stories”. The first one, which premiered last month, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has quickly become a fan favorite. Rogue One was self contained and told the story of how the Rebels got the plans for the Death Star in A New Hope.
The Han Solo movie will tell the story of a young Han Solo, traveling the galaxy (also) prior to the events of A New Hope. Not many details on story, official title, or even the exact place in the timeline it falls yet. But, it’ll be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur, and Simon Emanuel.
Personally, I hope Woody plays an already established alien scoundrel by the name of Janus Kasmir. He was a long time ally of Kanan (from Star Wars Rebels) and could easily see Harrelson fill that role as an older Janus, and with Disney’s sense of synergy, it’s entirely possible.
