Sega gave their big announcements a while back, revealing that Sonic Mania would be the game that scratched the itch of fans of Sonic being on a 2D plane. While that project continues to impress, including myself who has been critical about the series for years, many wanted to know more about the mysterious Sonic 2017 that was only briefly teased. Now, through Twitter, we have a name a single image. Sega has revealed this name to be Sonic Forces.
Judging just from the image, we can probably determine that this will be a darker story and setting for the series. There is probably a good reason we have two giant robots laying waste to everything around them, all while a defiant Blue Blur stands to oppose them. We may be getting into a post-apocalyptic setting, maybe even as a sequel to a previous game. As of right now, there are virtually no details about Sonic Forces, just an image and a promise for more information tomorrow.

Personally, I’ve rarely enjoyed Sonic, with a greater loathing towards the 3D games. Sonic Boom was arguably one of the most laughable products of this generation of consoles, one that will hopefully die a slow, slow death that ends in whispered obscurity. Although, I do like Sonic and crew as characters and I firmly believe that there is great potential in Sonic Forces. Sonic Generations was probably the closest thing to brilliant in the series, with an emphasis on visual flair and speed. If this game plays similarly to Generations, we may have a return to greatness for Sonic. I will add that Sonic Mania looks fantastic on all fronts and I’ll be excited to see what letting a former rom hacker can really do when let loose.
There will be more information on Sonic Forces tomorrow at some time. Those interested should stay tuned to Marooners’ Rock for all the official details.
