The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Oscar-nominated director Stephen Daldry, of Billy Elliot and The Hours fame, is in early talks to direct a new Star Wars standalone film that will focus on Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hollywood Reporter’s sources say the talks are in the earliest possible stages and that the project doesn’t even have a script as of yet. Also, the answer to the question on everyone’s mind, Ewan McGregor is still not linked to this project, though I personally hope that does happen.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi movie will fall into the family of Star Wars Stories movies like Rogue One and the Han Solo movie, and rumored movies such as those centered around Boba Fett, Yoda, and more. As for Ewan McGregor, he has said in the past that he was open to playing Obi-Wan again, though the sources once again stress since there is no script, there still is not actor attached.
Stephen Daldry made his feature debut with Billy Elliot and gave him his first Oscar nomination, and he followed those up with The Hours and The Reader, which also earned him nominations. Most recently, he has directed certain episodes of Netflix’s The Crown.
