Anime publisher Sentai Filmworks announced this week, plans that would see the gradual phasing out of DVDs for their anime releases.
The plan appears to gradually phase out DVDs from their product lineup, being done with them by 2019. There will be some caveats to the phase out however, including second or third seasons of titles already released with a DVD option. DVDs, for older titles with no Blu-ray materials that exist, will also still be released.
Future premium box sets will be designed to house Blu-ray formats only, putting an end to the Blu-ray/DVD combo sets they would sometime release. This does explain some of their recent release schedules though, as many of their older series have been getting complete collection Blu-ray sets. This includes The Familiar of Zero (December) and Squid Girl (November), which will be getting complete collection Blu-ray releases by the end of this year.
As part of a promotion, for those that purchase $299 worth of products from Sentai Filmworks’ online store, the publisher will be throwing in a complementary Blu-ray player. This will count for those that purchase the $299 worth, from Sept. 18, 2017 until Sept. 30, 2017.
