Earlier today, Netflix announced that they will not be showcasing The Punisher at New York Comic-Con after the tragic events that transpired in Las Vegas last Sunday. The panel was originally scheduled for October 7th, but due to the violent subject material that The Punisher series would contain, Netflix cancelled the event. Netflix and Marvel released a statement earlier today: “We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas. After careful consideration, Netflix and Marvel have decided it wouldn’t be appropriate for Marvel’s The Punisher to participate in New York Comic-Con.” The streaming service did cancel a Punisher panel in Paris as well following the shooting.
The mysterious marketing behind the new series suggests Netflix was planning to give viewers a surprise release date, as it was purposely hidden at the end of it’s official trailer. Rumors were circulating that Netflix was intending to release it this week immediately following the panel, but this was never proved to be true. This decision may upset some fans who were looking forward to the series, but I personally agree with Netflix. While it can be argued that there are numerous shows on television right now that feature gun-violence, The Punisher definitely looks to be an animal of it’s own. In the trailer, we see many instances of automatic weapons being used by Frank Castle, and the timing of the show would prove insensitive to all those affected by the shooting, especially those who lost loved ones. Also, anyone who’s watched Daredevil Season 2 knows all too well that Castle is an extremely violent character, and instances of someone taking pleasure in gunning down dozens of men (bad or good) would cause a reaction.
It isn’t rare for a form of entertainment to change it’s plans due to tragic events. Multiple movies, games and TV shows were either delayed, or outright cancelled after 9/11. While these decisions are deemed controversial, one must understand it is out of complete respect for the victims.
Since we technically do not have an official release date, we are unsure if the panel cancellations means Netflix is delaying the premiere date as well. As of right now, plans are still set for a 2017 premiere date.
