Berlin-based developers, Phantom 8, recently announced their debut game, Past Cure, a psychological action-thriller that follows former soldier turned lab experiment. As a result of the experiments, Ian is torn between his grim reality and the never ending nightmares that plague his sleep. With the help of his brother, and some acquired abilities like telekinesis, Ian embarks on a journey of revenge and discovery, blind to what lies before him.
From their website, the developers describe Past Cure’s gameplay as a contrast “between the cold, brutal combat orientated levels of the real world, to the more puzzle solving and survival gameplay in the abstract dreamworlds.” The game utilizes time manipulation and astral projection to overcome obstacles and create a more immersive story. Past Cure also features a 50/50 blend of action and stealth gameplay; each daunting situation will call for a different approach, and choosing the right one can be rewarding.
In addition to their announcement trailer, Phantom 8 have also released some behind the scenes footage that explores how a small, 8-person team produced such a high-quality and intense narrative experience. In a press release, Simon Gerdesmann, Phantom 8 Managing Director, said, “Developed by a team of only eight, we aim to showcase that desire, talent and ambition can help you deliver a title that stands apart from what’s traditionally expected from an Indie studio. Past Cure is our first title, and having secured multiple awards throughout its development, the team is excited to finally have the game out in the wild.”
The release date is set for February 23, 2018 on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and XBox One. Past Cure will be available soon for pre-order and purchase on Steam, Green Man Gaming, Fanatical and other digital distribution platforms.
