The game 40 Winks, which was cancelled in 1998, is now set to be released by Piko Interactive LLC. This has been made possible due to the incredible fact that it met its funding on Kickstarter in a mere ten hours time. As of now, the game has overstepped its goal of 20,000 dollars by another 74,000. On top of that, this will be the first game released since the N64 console was discontinued. This game was originally commissioned by GT Interactive, but faltered due to poor decisions on the part of GT Interactive, which led to the loss of revenue. Following this, was the death of many games currently under development, including 40 Winks, in order to sustain their company. While 40 Winks did make it into production on the original PlayStation, it was denied its chance on the N64 until today.
The game follows the adventures of brother and sister duo, Ruff and Tumble, as they embark on a journey to collect all 40 winks before the dastardly Nitekap steals them and turns them into hoodwinks. In addition, the game promises to hold many exciting features. Some of them include: the ability to transform in to different characters such as ninjas and super heroes; mini games; themed levels; and and a two-person co-op that is unique to the N64. Furthermore, keeping in-line with N64 tradition, the game cartridges will come packaged in a cardboard box and a color instruction manual.
The speed at which this game acquired funding seems to suggest that the gaming community is still very much interested in retro games, which means that more and more of these games may continue to show up as more and more support is garnered. Regardless, one thing is certain: 40 Winks is coming to N64 consoles, along with Steam, in the near future. Soon the gaming community will be able to experience it in all of its 64 bit glory.
