Dauntless, a new co-op action RPG, has been highly anticipated as of late due to its indie developer, Phoenix Labs. Phoenix Labs has been comprised of veterans from studios such as Riot, Capcom, and BioWare. So needless to say, Dauntless has quite the talented team behind it. Back in September 2017, a closed beta was opened for new IP, with over 100,000 players taking part as of now. Phoenix Labs has just announced that an open beta will soon follow on May 24. Around 700,000 people have already signed up at this time.
For those unfamiliar, Dauntless will be a new free-to-play title on Microsoft Windows that has been in development for over 4 years. The game will put players in a fantasy setting where the world has been in disarray after a cataclysmic event. This then released giant behemoths into the world. Players will take on the role of a “Slayer,” and their job sounds pretty self-explanatory. Dauntless is very easily compared to Monster Hunter, as it will be a 3rd person action style RPG where players can take on these behemoths either solo or cooperatively. Just like Monster Hunter, players will need to craft gear throughout to get the edge in battle. It’s unique art style makes it very accessible as well, being reminiscent of multiplayer titles such as Overwatch and Battleborn.
“Dauntless is more than four years in the making, and we can’t wait for everyone to join us in the Shattered Isles, team up with friends, take on Behemoths, craft epic gear and bring the world to life,” said Jesse Houston, CEO and co-founder of Phoenix Labs. “As we close in on our next phase of this adventure, we thank our passionate community that has been with us from day-one, providing feedback and helping craft the experience into what it is today. It has been an honor to create Dauntless together with you!”
As with any free-to-play games, skeptics may arise due to them thinking Dauntless will become a microtransaction infested title, a “Freemium” game as some people like to call it. Luckily for players, Phoenix Labs has ensured there will be no pay to win mechanics and in-game purchases will merely be cosmetic and vanity items.
