Kaet Must Die PAX Hands-On Preview

Kaet Must Die! Key Art Enemies

Have you ever felt like the world was against you? Well, in Kaet Must Die by Strength in Numbers Game Studios, it definitely is. There is not a being alive that does not want you dead. It is your job as the player, to survive long enough to uncover the shrouded mysteries, and solve the various puzzles. This is no easy feat, however.

The story of this gothic horror puzzler begins in the damp darkness of a sewer. You are a psionicist named Kaetheran and you are alone. Well not quite, there are a myriad of other creatures with you; they all want you dead. When I first encountered this game at PAX I was immediately struck by the level of difficulty that it presented. Not only is everything that you encounter trying kill you, it only takes one hit for them to do so.

Needless to say I died, a lot. Which is one of the key features that this game boasts. The level of difficulty that this game presents is insane, intentionally so. In the twenty minutes that I was able to playtest it, I died no less than 7 times. I would have thrown the controller against the screen had it been mine. Alas, my dignity prevented me from doing so. The intentional difficulty in this game is reminiscent of games like Getting Over It or Dark Souls. To the point where it is easy just to give up.

Speaking of key features, there are several others that warrant mentioning. As you may or may not have guessed by now, Kaet Must Die is indeed a horror game. When you play this game with the lights off and the sound up, it scares you out of your seat. It may even cause some soiling to occur in your pants. I know I certainly had a hard time keeping my composure, and I didn’t even play for too long.

Another feature that sets Kaet Must Die apart, is its inclusion of a sanity meter. The longer you are hiding in the shadows for safety, the more likely you are to lose your sanity.  Which is a good representation of the vibe of this game. The longer I played it the more it took hold of my mind, and the more I became immersed.

As of April 5th, 2018 Kaet Must Die is now on steam available for purchase for $14.99. It is also planned to be launched on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Oculus Rift, and HTC VIVE.  If you are a fan of horror and never-ending frustration, be sure to check it out by visiting the official website or their Facebook page.
