The upcoming horror title, Agony, has been receiving a lot of attention due to its graphic nature. In fact, it was so brutal and grisly that developer Madmind Studio had to tone it down to avoid an Adults Only rating from the ESRB. An AO rating would surely have a negative impact on sales, but I’m sure it’s that exact rating that would have many players curious. Still, like an NC-17 rating for films, game developers want to stay away from it all together in order to appeal to a much larger audience. Agony is about a week away from release, and a new trailer has been released for it’s survival mode, Agony Mode.
Agony Mode is a roguelike mode where players are given only one life. With that one life, they will need to explore procedurally generated labyrinth-like chambers. Madmind Studios states that this mode should definitely be played after gaining skills from the game’s main campaign as every mission is said to be completely unpredictable and unforgiving.
“Once a labyrinth’s quest objectives are completed and players reach the mysterious Red Chamber, they can earn additional points by braving new stages or returning to a cleared maze to play as one of Agony’s notorious prowling Succubi.”
Agony was actually funded via Kickstarter, and many fans are excited to see what terrors await. The core game will feature a full-fledged story where players must solve the mystery of the Red Goddess, while also surviving the very depths of hell. Full of horrific imagery and extreme violence, Agony is definitely attempting to leave a mark on the horror video game genre. The campaign is said to last at around 12 hours, with a new game plus and other challenge modes to take part in.
Agony is due to release on May 29 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Check out the trailers below.
