JRPGs may have some competition coming up. Midgar Studios has just released a progress update on their Kickstarter game “Edge of Eternity!” Now that over $161,000 have been raised for this beauty, the studio and Playdius, the publisher, are showing off new screenshots, gameplay, and some of the world’s lore!

Set on the planet Heryon, “Edge of Eternity” witnesses a society under siege by a mysterious enemy: the Archelite. As if their vast military power was not enough, they have employed biological warfare upon the planet’s population too, unleashing The Corrosion. This disease tears through the body, rending bones, wrenching limbs, and in the end transforms people into grotesque monstrosities.

Until a short while ago, Daryon was a soldier, laying down his life daily for his planet. Then he received word that his own mother was infected. Judging by the game’s new emblem, though, Daryon might be afflicted too! Now he and Selene brave the war-ravaged world and the creatures inhabiting it to find a cure. This open-world game revolves around exploration and real-time, turn-based combat. Their latest update also says that players will have opportunities to exploit their environments in a fight!

Part of this comes into play in their Nexus Grid system. This hexagonal grid shows how the terrain is divided. Each section could contain bad guys, buddies, or bonuses. In order to turn this system to your advantage, each playable character in “Edge of Eternity” will have unique skills designed to somehow manipulate this system. You might use one to lay down mines and another to force the enemy into them, for example.

Furthermore, “Edge of Eternity” now features a weapon evolution system and, best of all, a branching storyline! That’s right, the players actually get to influence the story!

Midgar Studio has even gone so far down the JRPG road as to make their own cute, fluffy, and borderline creepy psuedo-mascot: The Pilitch. Is it a bird? Is it a mammal? Beats us, but it’s got potential. Just… don’t look too close at its babyface.

If you want to know exactly what has been happening, check out the game’s brand new Steam page here! This will be a great source for lore, gameplay information, and screenshots as further updates arise! The studio promises that this is just the beginning of their announcements, though! They are dangling bait above us, promising yet greater reveals at Gamescom next month! We’ll keep a lookout and keep you posted!

An English and Western Laws & Ethics graduate from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Matt’s doing his best to find his way back to Middle Earth or Naboo. However, the closest he can get is reading, writing, or gaming, so he’s trying to accept his lack of pet dragons and devoting himself to those things instead. In his spare time, he practices traditional Chinese Ken-Po in the hopes that he will someday become an Earth Bender.
