Assassin’s Creed Will Not Go Back To Annual Releases

Assassin’s Creed was at once one of the biggest franchises in the gaming industry, with each new installment causing more excitement than the last. Unfortunately, the series then started to become stale to some gamers, as Ubisoft was releasing these on a yearly basis (it was Call of Duty’d as one might say). After Assassin’s Creed: Unity, the franchise looked to have gone downhill, as the released product felt rushed and unfinished. Many gamers, including myself, had written off the series after that. That was until 2017’s Assassin’s Creed: Origins. This was a complete overhaul from top to bottom. The recent entry turned the AC series into a fully realized open-world RPG instead of the open-world action adventure titles fans were used.

In 2016, there was no AC release, and taking a year off really showed the quality title that Origins ended up becoming. When AC: Odyssey was announced to be releasing later this year, it was safe to assume that Ubisoft was once again going back to their annual release schedule. Well, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, this may not be the case.

In a recent interview with Gamespot, Guillemot stated that gamers shouldn’t expect a new “full-fledged Assassin’s” in 2019. Instead, many of the focus is going to shift towards supporting Odyssey with new content over the upcoming year.

“What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin’s Creed Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.”

Guillemot does not explicitly state that the AC series won’t be going back to the annual release schedule, but instead he states that taking a year off “gave the team the possibility to really bring what they wanted to.” So this isn’t to say that Ubisoft won’t eventually bring this release schedule back, but for now, we’ll just have wait and see. I’m sure Odyssey will capture the same magic and adventure that Origins contained, and I’m super excited to start exploring Ancient Greece.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey to release this year on October 5 for Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For more information on the upcoming title, check out my impressions on the E3 2018 demo we saw over the summer.
